The Australian experts in steel

We are proud to support and be involved with Australian Pipeline Industry Association (APIA), as a means to interact with the industry and contribute to its technological developments.

"APIA represents, and works for, all companies involved in Australia's pipeline industry," says the organisation's Chief Executive, Cheryl Cartwright. "And, clearly, steel manufacturing is an important part of the industry. By participating in APIA's events, its various committees and research, BlueScope has been able to make a contribution to the nation's transmission pipeline industry."

Whilst we support APIA in a number of ways, three of our priorities are:

  • contributing to the technical capabilities for the utilisation of steel in the industry
  • playing a role in generating solutions for broader pipeline engineering challenges
  • helping in the education of emerging leaders in the field.

Our direct involvement in such initiatives as the APIA Research and Standards Committee has included the:

  • development of AS2885
  • undertaking of extensive welding trials
  • development of specialised test methods to ensure the safe and productive weldability of BlueScope Steel product for linepipe applications
  • provision of materials and facilities for testing, as well as materials engineering technical guidance.

In conjunction with APIA, we contribute to the Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre just as in the past, when it operated, we contributed to the Cooperative Research Centre for Welded Structures.
